My name is Ragini Kapil. It took me a long time to get used to it.
Always being othered led to a profound need to observe people and their stories, while also trying to navigate through their world and my own story.
I am not easy to pronounce. My name is not Michelle or Tiffany, or something more conventional. It sounds like Prague, but I’m Ragini – this is my name, my world, and you are invited to be part of it.
My background includes 34 years in the education sector, with a Masters in Education from the University of British Columbia.
My most recent position was with the Delta School District, where I was a Principal and spearheaded contemporary curriculum development that challenged traditional school norms.
Although education always has a special place in my heart, I am now pursuing my lifelong passion for the arts, as well.
My cultural background, with roots in India and Fiji, education, experience as a teacher and principal, and experiences living in an extended family have provided me with rich fodder as I hone my craft.
While still a teacher, I’d create films with my students to enhance the curriculum while giving them an awareness of how film magic works. My students and I filmed a BC Hydro Powersmart commercial, which was aired throughout BC. I created a rap for fire safety that was sent to the National Fire Prevention Association.
I began editing by physically cutting and splicing film together, graduating to using editing software such as Pinnacle, Windows Movie Maker, iMovie, and Final Cut Pro.
I have a number of scripts which are in the finishing stages of being written and have also made an award-winning short film called All Kinds of Weather, about a young South Asian woman trapped between cultural expectations and an unhappy marriage. You can watch the film here.
My second short film, The Comedy Doula is in its finishing stages of post-production. This film explores the capability of Laughter Zone 101’s Jan Bannister to teach students to explore their vulnerabilities, and find the funny on stage.
My work transports me to a place that is both challenging and fulfilling.
